ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Rob Friedrich, Tom & Candy Knudson director of navy rowing and head coach of the heavyweight team, announced on Tuesday that Alex Kincaid has joined the heavyweight coaching staff. In addition, Ethan Shoemakerthe Mids’ sophomore assistant coach, was promoted to recruiting coordinator for the program.
A talented competitor and trainer from the Maryland-DC area, Kincaid was a coxswain for four years with Washington College’s heavyweight team before joining the coaching ranks as a rowing coach with DeMatha Catholic High School and most recently as head coach at Catholic University.
“We are very happy to have Alex on staff here at Hubbard Hall,” noted Friedrich. “He brings a wealth of rowing and leadership knowledge to the team, which will be instrumental in guiding our rowers to become better contenders and student-athletes.”
Kincaid immediately jumped into the coaching business after graduating from Washington College in 2019 as an assistant coach for the Catholic University and DeMatha Catholic High School programs in the fall of 2019. he was Catholic, he supported the men’s and women’s teams. While coaching at DeMatha, he coached varsity men and developed a coaching rotation to maximize team coaching strengths and advance athlete skills, as well as structured a training plan for programs. scholars and novices for the fall, winter and spring seasons.
In January 2020, he was elevated to coach the Catholic men’s rowing team. During his three seasons in charge of the Cardinals, Kincaid helped his team navigate two seasons that were badly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic before leading the program to new heights in the 2021-22 season. as they raced to lead the Charles for the first time, as well as third at the 2022 Knecht Cup and sixth at the 2022 Mid Atlantic Rowing Conference Championship. Kincaid and Catholic concluded their 2022 campaign with their first ever place at the IRA Nationals as all four academics earned a place in that respective ranking. Under his guidance, Declan Waters was named to the 2022 IRCA All-American Second Team.
As a collegiate competitor, Kincaid was a team captain for two years and a 2019 All-Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference (MARC) selection at Washington College. He was also a two-time tag team MVP. Additionally, Kincaid was a three-time Academic All-MARC selection and recipient of the 2018 Elizabeth “Bo” Blanchard Memorial Sportmanship Award.
During his high school career at DeMatha, Kincaid captained the varsity team for two years and earned All-Met honorable mentions.
“The tradition of rowing at Hubbard Hall and the level of excellence both on and off the water at the Naval Academy are unparalleled in collegiate rowing,” Kincaid said. “I am delighted to be on staff here and look forward to working with an incredibly talented group of aspirants.”
He graduated from Washington College in 2019 with a BA in Philosophy and went on to earn a Master of Science in Leadership and Management in 2022.
In addition to Kincaid joining the heavyweight team, Friedrich announced on Tuesday that the second-year assistant coach Ethan Shoemaker was promoted to Senior Assistant and Recruitment Coordinator. After joining the Navy’s heavyweight rowing program in August 2021, Shoemaker took the reins of the Mids’ lower boats and helped guide the fifth varsity crew to victories over Princeton and Harvard, while the sixth varsity won gold at the 2022 Eastern Sprints.
“I’m very excited to elevate Ethan to the position of first assistant and recruiting coordinator,” Friedrich said. “He was a fantastic coach and mentor to our athletes last year, making them better on the water and as teammates to each other. He has already made a huge impression on our future recruiting classes. “
