An early morning fire damaged the historic Incarnation in south Minneapolis. According to dispatches, a fire broke out around 3:45 a.m. on March 9. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, but smoke damaged the historic church.
The Minneapolis Fire Department “has been absolutely excellent at putting out a fire early enough (we believe) and limiting the damage,” Incarnation pastor Father Kevin McDonough said in a message to neighbors at the church. which is located at the corner of West 38th Street and Pleasant Avenue.
No one was in the church at the time, which helped firefighters quickly extinguish the blaze, according to media reports.
In a message he shared with nearby Hiawatha Academy and passed on to neighbours, Father McDonough wrote: ‘This is going to sound crazy I guess – but it was about the best outcome a bad fire can. produce. Direct damage was limited to one side of the chapel (although there was smoke damage throughout). The Minneapolis Fire Department did an excellent job of putting out the fire.
Father McDonough said a parishioner who lives nearby saw smoke coming out of the church on his way to work. The parishioner called his wife, the fire department and woke up his pastor.
“Pray for our people, please, who will feel bad about their beloved church and devotional spaces,” Father McDonough wrote to the school community.
According to an email sent to the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis by Father McDonough, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
“We will likely limit all activity at the church today, but I expect we will be up and running in the next few days,” Father McDonough told neighbors.
