Bishop Robert Deeley plans to join Pope Francis and other bishops around the world in making an act of consecration of Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Prayer is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. on Friday, March 25 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception at 307 Congress St. in Portland.

All are welcome to attend in person, and the event will also be streamed live on catholicportland.org. Maine parishes are also being asked to hold similar prayer times locally, according to a press release from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland.

The event will take place in the main cathedral. Mass at 12:15 p.m. during the week will be celebrated in the chapel of the cathedral.

Pope Francis on March 17 asked the bishops of the world to join him in making an act of consecration of Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in preparation for war.

The Pontifical Mission Societies, which are the pope’s charities, and Catholic Relief Services, the official international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States, work to help the people of Ukraine.
