VIENNA – Gloria Jean Furrie, 89, rose to fame, surrounded by her children on Tuesday, December 14, 2021.

Gloria was born on October 16, 1932 in Warren. She was the daughter of Pompey G. Felice Sr. and Lucy Felice.

She met John Duke Furrie Jr., the son of John P. Sr. and Dora Furrie, and they were married on October 28, 1950. They had been married for 65 years when Duke died on February 4, 2016. They had four children. , John P. Furrie III (Linda) of Naples, Florida, Lu Ann Bowser of Trussville, Alabama, Mark Furrie Sr. (Theresa) of Howland and Jeffrey A. Furrie (Patricia) of Howland. Gloria leaves behind 16 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren to cherish her memory. She is also survived by her brother, Jay Felice.

Gloria worked for Youngstown Cartage before she and Duke founded Duke’s Sanitary Service in 1982.

Prior to entering Heaven, Gloria lived a long and richly blessed life as a resident of Vienna. She has been active in the community as a Girl Scout Leader, a member of the PTA, a founding member of the Mathews Football Booster Club and a member of the Ladies Guild in St. Thomas the Apostle.

Retired, she and Duke divided their time between West Palm Beach, Florida, and Vienna. Gloria loved to read, play cards and travel. She was an active member of the Bugnarese Club, a group of women who had ancestors or had lived in the small village of Bugnara, where her father was born, in the Abruzzo region of Italy.

Many friendships have been forged within this club. She especially enjoyed her dear and special friend, Betty Salomone, as well as her beloved aunt Ann Detoro, who preceded her in death.

She was the matriarch of the family and kept everyone together through a number of family events.

Gloria was deeply loved by many and will be sadly missed by all friends and family.

She was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband, Duke; son-in-law, Douglas A. Bowser Sr .; as well as many other family members.

A Christian funeral mass will be offered at 10 am on Saturday, December 18, 2021, at the Catholic community of St. Thomas the Apostle, with Reverend Scott Kopp officiating. There will be no calling hours, at Gloria’s request.

The entombment will follow at Crown Hill Burial Park, Vienna.
