Two Hamilton County women’s lacrosse teams faced off for the Class 2A state championship, which was held Saturday afternoon at Heritage Christian: Guerin Catholic and Carmel.
It was a dramatic game, with four goals scored in the last 92 seconds. The Golden Eagles had the last laugh, as a perfect breakaway from Kassidy Bell led to a Mariah Ross score that gave Guerin Catholic the lead with 43.5 seconds left. The Golden Eagles hung on from there to win the 2A state title, 7-6 over the Greyhounds.
Guerin Catholic finished the season unbeaten at 20-0.
“The draw checks come and go throughout the game,” said GC coach Brian Billand. “They’ve won those last two games and then we have the chance to get control of the last draw, pull it back and set up for a nice goal.”
The Golden Eagles led 6-4 before Carmel’s Sophie Mock took over, scoring twice in 17 seconds to tie the game. At control of the next draw, Bell blasted up the pitch and found Ross, who scored easily.
Carmel scored the game’s first goal, with Anna Dunke finding the back of the net less than a minute into the game. Caitlin Carter equalized with 16:23 to go, but Tori Tomalia scored just 50 seconds later to put the Greyhounds back in front, and they would stay ahead for the rest of the half.
Elizabeth Tomalia added a goal to make it 3-1 for Carmel, and Clare Alic de Guerin scored to cut the lead to 3-2. Both teams scored again before half-time, with Elizabeth Tomalia scoring a second goal and Ella Bellflower responding to keep the Golden Eagles 4-3 at the break.
Alic scored the first goal of the second half, which tied things at 4-4. It was the start of a run for Guerin Catholic, as Alexandra Soucie scored with 7:44 left, then Isabelle Aigotti scored to put the Golden Eagles ahead 6-4 with 1:32 left. The goalscoring frenzy ensued, but Guerin Catholic managed to hang on for the win.
“It’s so great, especially to win it all against such a tough team like Carmel,” Billand said. “Carmel was the gold standard in lacrosse in Indiana for a decade, so it was really nice to come out on top.”
“It was a great game,” Greyhounds coach Joshua Miller said. “Hats off to them. They score that last really important goal there with 40 seconds left. They are fast. They are fast, they are well trained. They were disciplined with the ball today. And they made a hell of a job.”
