  • The 142nd Fancy Farm Picnic is scheduled for Saturday August 6, 2022

Held annually on the first Saturday in August at St. Jerome’s Catholic Church, the Fancy Farm Picnic is considered to kick off the Commonwealth’s political season. Elected officials from both sides of the political spectrum are invited to attend, with speakers usually cracking jokes and firing at the other side in a light-hearted way.

Democrat Bob Babbage, a lobbyist who previously served as secretary of state and auditor of state, hosted last year. The role of emcee alternates between Democrats and Republicans every two years.

Speaker Osborne will be the first Speaker of the House to host the picnic, the last being former Speaker Jody Richards in 2006.

“The Fancy Farm Picnic is a great political tradition in the Commonwealth and each year it is difficult to choose a master of ceremonies,” said Steven Elder, political chairman of the picnic. “We are fortunate to have so many people who come to Western Kentucky each year for the event and certainly lucky to have President Osborne as our emcee.

Last year’s event was more subdued than previous years, in part due to the COVID-19 pandemic. No incumbent Democrats attended last year, so it was dominated by Republicans who heavily fired on Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear.

This year, however, is shaping up to be a lively picnic for both parties. State Auditor Mike Harmon, Attorney General Daniel Cameron and Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles launched their campaigns to challenge Beshear for the governorship. In the Senate race, Republican incumbent Rand Paul and Democratic nominee Charles Booker could also be in attendance.

More than just barbecued pork and mutton chops, the Western Kentucky Picnic attracts national attention every year. Learn more about Fancy Farm here.
