Italian-American Leaders Meet with Pope Francis and Government Officials to Reaffirm Our Community’s Religious and Cultural Ties to Italy | Business



ROME, Italy, May 14, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — It was a historic week in Rome and Vatican City as a delegation of Italian-American leaders met with government officials and Pope Francis to advance initiatives cultural and religious interests – and to prepare the ground for new economic opportunities – between the United States and Italy.

The delegation, brought together by Judge Basil M. Russo – who heads the Conference of Presidents of Major Italian-American Organizations (COPOMIAO) – organized a roundtable with judges from the Italian Supreme Court, met with the Italian Deputy Minister of Business foreign affairs and sat down with the Vatican’s Secretary of State to identify issues of common interest.

“Our Catholic faith is such a complex and essential part of our heritage that it defines, more than anything else, our Italian-American identity. It deserves renewed care and attention,” Russo said.

The historic “Eternal City” tour is a one-of-a-kind event and one of many new high points designed to preserve and promote Italian-American history, traditions, institutions, and financial and cultural connectivity with the Italy.

“In the past 18 months alone, COPOMIAO has united hundreds of Italian-American organizations to preserve and revive the culture that our ancestors brought with them from Italy,” Russo said. “Now we are forming strategic partnerships and alliances across Italy to complete our journey.”

Meanwhile, discussions are ongoing with the White House, Italian-American politicians, various museum officials, and high-level educators to promote public policy, advocacy initiatives, and the Italian language in the United States.

Additionally, COPOMIAO will sponsor an Italian-American Youth Summit in Florida next year to energize younger generations around our heritage.



Formed in 1975 and based in New York, the Conference of Presidents of Major Italian American Organizations (COPOMIAO) is made up of 54 of the nation’s most influential cultural, educational, fraternal, and anti-defamation groups.
