Kerala CPM introduces ‘left travel buddy’ Cardiologist in Thrikkakara Bypass

The CPM on Thursday announced a cardiologist as the party’s candidate in the by-election at the Thrikkakara Assembly headquarters in Kerala.

Dr Jo Joseph would face Congress’s Uma Thomas, widow of PT Thomas, the late MP whose death last year necessitated the bypoll.

The CPM focused on the doctor, who is from the Catholic community, after actively considering Ernakulam district committee member of the party, KS Arun Kumar, as a candidate. Party workers even painted his name on roadside walls as part of the election campaign, before brutally arresting him.

Announcing the party’s candidate, Democratic Left Front official EP Jayarajan told reporters that Dr Joseph had strong ties to the people and the CPM. “He is very active in social work. Its role in heart surgeries, including heart transplants, has been recognized. When we got this doctor, why should we think of other candidates?” he said.

Hours later, Dr. Joseph, who works at a Church-run hospital, said he was a fellow LDF traveler. “My candidacy was not subject to the intervention of any community. The allegation that I am a Church candidate is baseless. I’m lucky to be a leftist candidate,’ he told reporters.

Also in the last Assembly election, the CPM aligned a doctor, orthopedist J Jacob, in Thrikkakara against Thomas. While Dr Jacob was an independent backed by the LDF, Dr Joseph will contest the by-election on the CPM symbol.
