MUSKEGON – Ava Pelton enters every competition hoping to win.

The freshman wrestler in Montague’s women’s wrestling program showed great composure, tenacity and skill in her first few months as a college grappler and recently saw her hard work pay off with a pair of event championships in his weight division.

Pelton earned division honors last week after earning an 11-10 win in the Lloyd Cogswell Memorial Wrestling Invitational Championship match at Ravenna High School last Saturday. She also won an event title at the Adam H Provencal Wrestling Tournament at Grand Haven High School on January 6.

“Ava is a very hardworking and naturally athletic athlete,” Montague head coach Kris Maddox said. “She’s strong and not afraid to be aggressive. These traits naturally help her win a lot of matches. She fits in well with our group of eight girls, all of whom deserve an award like this. This It’s not easy being a freshman in a mostly male team let alone wrestling It’s the toughest sport there is Ava stepped out of her comfort zone to help with the soccer.

“For her to join the team without ever having struggled takes courage, but to see the early success is great. It has a lot to do with her fearless attitude in every game. She is going very strong in every game and the more she learns, it will really force her to become better.

Maddox was thrilled to see his wrestling room grow over the past offseason with the addition of more female wrestlers to the program like Pelton.

“Montague’s wrestling has come a long way from just two girls on the team three years ago,” he added. “We’ve grown to eight girls this year and we love seeing them all do well, but Ava and the other ladies have so much room to grow. Their potential is limitless. It’s very exciting to see her get such recognition.

“We are very proud of her, but without the support of her other female Wildcat teammates and male teammates, this wouldn’t be possible. We knew she had potential early on because she knocked out two former state placers in the first two weeks of the season. The goal will be to continue its success in the sections and the state. She will help pave the way for girls across the state.

The talented freshman grappler added another title to her resume this week as she scored a decisive victory in MLive Muskegon’s first fan poll of Athlete of the Week. Pelton received more than 26,000 total votes to capture almost 40% of the polls total.

Grand Haven hockey player Kaden Wells finished second with more than 16,000 total votes after recording two goals and two assists in last weekend’s Stan Konrad Memorial Showcase tournament. Newaygo girls’ basketball star Jaxi Long finished third overall with over 6,000 votes after his heroic effort in a 61-54 win over Western Michigan Christian last Tuesday that saw Long score 22 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter to power his team to a road win.

Spring Lake boys Charles Brown placed fourth with over 5,000 votes, while Muskegon Catholic Central boys Jaden Johnson finished fifth with over 4,000 votes.
