Northern Maine Medical Center is thrilled to announce its new President and CEO, Jeff Zewe, who will join the organization later this month.

FORT KENT, Maine – Northern Maine Medical Center is thrilled to announce its new President and CEO, Jeff Zewe, who will join the organization later this month.

When NMMC’s current President and CEO, Peter Sirois, announced his upcoming retirement to the Board in the spring of 2021, the Board embarked on a nationwide search for the right person to lead NMMC into the future. . After months of reviewing applications, they invited three to St. John Valley for in-person meetings with the organization’s board, staff and leadership.

“Many of our patients are deeply connected to the rich heritage of the Saint John Valley. Our Board of Directors understands and respects this and therefore made it a priority to find a leader who had the skills and experience to lead the Northern Maine Medical Center into the future, and in addition who would embrace the region and its inhabitants and would be a good match for the culture of our organization. We believe we have found all of the above in Mr. Zewe,” Sirois said.

NMMC became the community hospital of St. John Valley seven decades ago when it opened as Peoples Benevolent Hospital. Board Chairman Don Guimond said the board wanted to honor traditions of leadership and community in its choice of the next person to lead the organization.

“Northern Maine Medical Center has been provided with strong leadership and direction since its inception 70 years ago with the visionary skills of its early leaders of the Little Franciscans of Mary, a Catholic order of nuns with special skills in hospital management, to our current CEO. Peter Sirois who has successfully guided the organization through its years of service, and especially during these difficult times in the healthcare industry. The responsibility of the Board of Directors to the organization, its employees and those we serve is to ensure that the tradition of strong and dedicated leadership continues into the future. As a Board of Directors, we believe we have accomplished this in the selection of our new leader, Jeff Zewe. Welcome to the NMMC family,” Guimond said.

Zewe is a seasoned leader with over 30 years of experience in healthcare. Most recently, he was President and CEO of Upper Allegheny Health System in western New York State along the Pennsylvania border, leading that organization through the difficult first months of the onset of the pandemic. He began working with UAHS in 2011 in various roles before becoming President and CEO, including Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, and Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer. He served as President of Excela Health – Frick Hospital in Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania from 2008 to 2010; Vice President of Patient Care Services at Excela Health – Latrobe and Frick Hospitals from 2006 to 2008; and director of nursing at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh from 2000 to 2006. Zewe received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and a master’s degree in business administration from Point Park University. , also in Pittsburgh.

Personally, I look forward to enjoying the beautiful scenery while boating, mountain biking, skiing, hiking and visiting neighboring Canada.

Zewe will begin his transition as President and CEO of NMMC on February 28, working alongside Sirois to familiarize himself with the organization and operations before fully assuming the role on May 1.
