The Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has called on the Catholic community in Nnewi to support the new Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Reverend Jonas-Benson Okoye.
Governor Obiano made the call during the Bishop’s installation ceremony held at Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral in Nnewi.
Government correspondent Ejike Abana reports that the event attracted the Catholic Nuncio and Permanent Representative to ECOWAS, Archbishop Antonio Guido Nuncio, forty-seven Archbishops, Bishops and Reverend Fathers of the Interior and outside the state, including the Metropolitan Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Onitsha, Archbishop Valerian Okeke, among others.
Governor Obiano, who called the event special in the life of the Church, asked the Catholic faithful to join the new bishop in encouraging him to succeed.
The Governor congratulated Bishop Hillary Okeke for the good work he did during his stay and wished the new Bishop good luck in his new vocation.
In a message of goodwill, the President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, Bishop Augustine Akabueze, congratulated Bishop Okoye on being chosen by the Pope, saying the new post had a lot of authority, but warned that ‘it should be exercised in the love of the Church. and the people of God.
While describing himself as a servant of God’s design and expressing his optimism that his stay in the diocese will be fruitful, Bishop Okoye, who applauded Governor Obiano’s development progress, particularly the construction of the international cargo airport and passenger from Anambra, Umueri, revealed that some 30 Bishops flew in through the airport, saying the Church will continue to partner with individuals, governments and agencies to promote the work of God.
Earlier, the Bishop Emeritus of the Catholic Diocese of Nnewi, Bishop Hillary Odili-Okeke, who explained that he resigned from office due to health issues in line with church principles, asked God to bless the congregation and expressed his gratitude to all who came for the installation
Also in attendance were Governor-elect of Anambra, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, All Progressives Grand Alliance National President, Chief Victor Oye, Former APGA National President, Senator Victor Umeh, among others.
