Patricia Gerich Slovak, affectionately known as Patsy and Grandmother Pat, came through this lifetime to meet her maker on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, after battling breast cancer which metastasized to her bones after 2 years of remission. Throughout this fight, which began in 2018, she held her head high, remaining positive and accepting her fate without complaining.

Pat was born into a large Czech family of 10 children, five brothers and 4 sisters. She was known to be strong, stubborn, always hardworking and loving…and felt it was her duty to keep everyone in line and always do the ‘right’ thing. She was proud of her Czech heritage and often attended PolkaFest, WestFest, Sokol Hall events, and was a member of KTJ, KJZT, and KC Hall. Pat was also a member of St John’s Nepomucene Church in Ennis; and attended St John’s Catholic School from elementary until transferring to Ennis High School, where she graduated in 1972. She spent 2 years at Navarro College, earning an Associate’s degree in commerce, which launched her 15-year career at EBF, followed by 24 years at SWB/ATandT, from which she retired in 2010.

Pat married Mickey Kubelka in 1978, then in 1986 they had their only child, Suzanne…with whom they loved to spoil and train! Pat and Mickey divorced in 1994, and she met Danny Slovak in 1996, who has been by her side faithfully for 25 years…sharing her love of gardening and camping.

Pat called herself a “country girl” loving country music and country life, learning to drive a tractor at the age of 6 and caring for her pet skunk! Her country roots stayed with her throughout her life, as her favorite hobbies were gardening, picking pecans and berries, caring for her dog, Bonnie, her cats and her pigeons. , and hundreds of plants. Her favorite form of travel was jumping in the RV and camping, and she especially loved the mountains and pines of Colorado.

Pat leaves behind her husband of 25 years, Danny Slovak, her brother Raymond and his wife Cindy, her brother Edward Gerich and his wife Teresa, her brother Emil Gerich and his wife Leona, her sister Dorothy Gerich and her husband Mitch Baltuch, her daughter Suzanne McGinnis and her husband Neil, granddaughters Hannah, Portland and Ares, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Pat was predeceased by her mother, Annie Horak Gerich, her father, Bob Gerich, her sisters: Margaret Haskovec, Vicky Johnson, Anna Lou Jones and her brothers: Wesley and Stanley Gerich. If Pat could speak to us now, she would tell us not to cry for her, because she had a great life and part of her will live on in her child and grandchildren. She would tell us to take comfort in the memories shared over the years and to remind her husband, daughter and granddaughters how much she loved them.

The viewing will take place on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 from 10 a.m. followed by a rosary at 7 p.m.

The funeral will take place on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at 10 a.m. All events will be held at the Boze Mitchell Mckibbin Funeral Home in Ennis. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
