WASHINGTON — A northeast DC Catholic school is raising money to repair damage caused by someone who smashed several concrete window sills and toppled a statue of the school’s namesake weeks before the first day of school.

St. Anthony’s Catholic School said three pews were pulled out of the ground and damaged, the concrete window sill was shattered and the head of the statue was smashed and stolen.

According to a police report, an unknown suspect destroyed school property from the late hours of Wednesday evening August 10 until the early morning of Thursday August 11 and removed the head of the statue.

A GoFundMe was created to help raise funds to replace the statue, broken benches and repair damage to the school. The school said any additional funding will improve safety around the school and beautify the outdoor space. Monday evening, more than $18,000 was raised in donations.

The school says it is celebrating 100 years in the Brookland neighborhood. “We are very hurt by the actions of one or a few, but we plan to repair all damage before the first day of school,” the Catholic school posted on its GoFundMe page.

The school calls the incident a “hate crime,” according to the school’s GoFundMe page. The vandalized spaces were created and funded through donations from school families and the community for the community.

“Many neighborhood volunteers have put in the money to make our outdoor space inviting and welcoming to all. The playgrounds have always remained unlocked so they are available to the neighborhood,” the Catholic school posted on its GoFundMe page. “It was not just a loss for our church and our school, but really a loss for the community.”

The first day of classes for St. Anthony Catholic School is August 28.
