SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) — A pandemic-born St. Patrick’s Day tradition has returned for its second year at St. James Catholic School.

After the Savannah parade was canceled last year, they decided to hold their own.

“Every day is a great day in Savannah, but especially today to see our children, young people, so excited about St. Patrick’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and tradition here in Savannah,” Bishop said. Stephen Parkes.

For the students of St. James Catholic School, this small parade is very important.

“It was a little scary but also a little fun at the same time,” said Grade 4 student Grady Pace.

Their parade, now in only its second year, gives students the opportunity to honor and reflect on their Irish heritage.

“It means I can think of my ancestors and where they come from because most of them on my mum’s side of the family came from Ireland,” said Year 4 student Finnley Jernigan.

As part of a special treat this year, the parade also aligned with the celebration of Grandparents Day.

What seemed fair to Bishop Parkes, “We have something special here and that is that we can pass on to the next generation something that we are proud of here in Savannah. That’s the beauty of the St. Patrick’s Day season.

Although this parade doesn’t come with the same fanfare as the Savannah parade, this year’s Grand Marshal Danny Powers says it has everything you need.

“It really shows you what faith and family and friends are all about. So it was really special today.

Plus, he even got some advice from a few Grand Marshal veterans along the way.

“Walk neatly and orderly, I suppose,” said Pace, the 4th-year grand marshal.

“Always have a smile and always wave,” added fellow Grand Marshal Jernigan.

“So that’s what I intend to do. That will be a key part of all of this,” Powers laughed.

If this parade is any indication for Thursday’s, it looks like we’re in store for a great St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah.

“Tomorrow will be beautiful, I pray for that,” Bishop Parkes said.
