The Portsmouth Catholic SHARE Fund is looking to help more around Seacoast NH

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth Catholic SHARE Fund will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year, and its leaders say they are working to become more visible in the community.

Run by Corpus Christi Parish, they want to commemorate SHARE’s success in helping Seacoast neighbors in need, but they also want to make sure people know who they are and how they can help.

Paul Kayne, executive director of the SHARE Fund, said Father Edward Kelley, formerly of Corpus Cristi Parish, started it after seeing the needs of the community and feeling the church could help.

“We’ve noticed that over the past few years, with COVID and other economic factors, the needs of our community are changing,” Kayne said. “We see what people need and we want to expand our service area and maybe add to the ways we traditionally help. Above all, we want to let people know we are there and ready to help.”

What is the SHARE Fund?

The SHARE Fund is an emergency program that provides needed financial assistance to those who have exhausted or are not eligible for other means of support, providing a safety net to cover immediate needs. SHARE is funded by the Corpus Christi Parish Poor Box, private donations and corporate benefactors.

Kayne said they provide services to residents of Portsmouth, Greenland, New Castle and Newington, regardless of religion.

“We see there are others, in areas like Dover, Eliot and Kittery, that we can offer help to, and we want to,” Kayne said. “We usually work with the social welfare offices in the cities, so they can check the need. But people can also call our number. We have volunteers who come on Tuesdays and Fridays who will receive these messages and respond to questions. phone calls.”

The SHARE office is located at 98 Summer St., the lower level of Vianney House, Corpus Christi Parish Rectory (enter from Austin Street), Tuesdays 9 a.m. to noon and Fridays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
