WEATHER REPORT – Heavy storms swept through the area this morning, bringing high winds and rain. No major damage was reported from the storms, but they caused widespread power outages. Oncor’s Area Manager Sabrina Easley said about 3,700 customers lost power during the storms, but by 7.45 a.m. that number had been reduced to around 1,600, mostly around the lake: Runaway Bay, Lake Bridgeport and Chico. About 600 Boyd customers were without power around 7 a.m., and Boyd ISD announced a two-hour delay in classes. Wise County is subject to a 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. wind advisory today as northwest winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour with gusts of up to 40 miles per hour are expected. At 7:45 a.m., total precipitation included 0.65 inches at Greenwood, 0.6 at Cottondale, 0.56 at Bridgeport and 0.39 at Decatur.
THE CITY ISSUES OVER $ 33 MILLION IN BONDS – Decatur city council on Monday evening approved the issuance of $ 33,443,925 in bond certificates to fund a number of capital projects. The measure was passed 6-1 with board member Darlene Hilton the only vote against. The bonds will be used to finance water and sanitation systems projects, a new police department, land acquisition, improvements to parks and libraries. The tax rate required to cover the cost of the bonds is 20.88 cents per $ 100,000 of property valuation. There will be public hearings on the debt issuance in the coming weeks. SCHOOLS EVACUATED AFTER GAS LEAKS – A gas line was ruptured during maintenance work on the outdoor grounds of Boyd Middle / Middle School on Tuesday morning, prompting Boyd ISD to evacuate students and staff to the high school gymnasium, according to one email sent to parents. Atmos Energy has been contacted to cut the line.
PROLONGED BURNING PROHIBITION – Wise County Commissioners extended the weather-related burning ban for an additional 90 days at the request of Wise County Fire Marshal Jeff Doughty on Monday. Under the ban, burning is banned in the county on days when Fort Worth’s National Weather Service issues a red flag or high fire risk warnings.
VOLLEYBALL RESULTS – The Decatur Lady Eagles finished District play 7-4A with an unblemished 12-0 record after sweeping Castleberry on Tuesday. The Boyd Lady Jackets also went undefeated in 10-3A with a 14-0 streak capped by a sweep against Whitesboro 25-18, 25-15, 25-16. The Bridgeport Sissies defeated Lake Worth in straight sets 25-17, 25-15, 25-19. The Paradise Lady Panthers swept the S&S 25-12, 25-21, 25-16. The Alvord Lady Bulldogs faced Forestburg 25-10, 25-10, 25-14. The Chico Lady Dragons swept Perrin-Whitt on 25-15, 25-17, 25-12. The Northwest Lady Texans added a 3-0 victory over Denton Ryan.
